Improv and theater games: Grades 2-6

This high-energy theater class invites students in grades 2–6 to explore the joy of performance through theater games and improvisation. Designed to build confidence, creativity, and collaboration, students will strengthen their speaking and listening skills, practice thinking on their feet, and learn how to support one another on stage.

Through engaging activities and ensemble-based exercises, performers will develop foundational acting skills such as focus, expression, character creation, and storytelling. Students will also be introduced to age-appropriate theatrical vocabulary, helping them build a strong understanding of key theater terms and concepts while gaining confidence using that language in rehearsal and performance settings.

Classes are led by Katie Bloom, a certified theater teacher who is also certified in elementary and special education. Students of all experience and ability levels are welcome. This program provides a safe, supportive, and fun environment where every child can grow as both a performer and a confident communicator.

Dates: Thursdays 3/19-5/14 (skipping April 15), 5-6pm

Cost: $300

Storytelling through Theater: grades 7-12

This dynamic performance-based class invites middle and high school students to explore the art of storytelling through theater. Designed for performers of any experience level, the course focuses on bringing stories to life using voice, movement, character development, and ensemble collaboration.

Young actors will workshop beloved children’s books, transforming them from page to stage through creative adaptation and rehearsal.

Along the way, they will strengthen acting technique, build confidence in public performance, and learn how to engage young audiences with clarity, imagination, and heart. Emphasis is placed on expressive storytelling, physicality, vocal variety, and working as a cohesive ensemble.

The class is taught my Newtown Stage Company co-founder and educator Katie Bloom and culminates with a public performance at the C.H. Booth Library. This final presentation provides a meaningful real-world performance experience for participants and a free community event. At the final class we will meet at the library at 5 o’clock and the performance will be at 6 o’clock.

Dates: Thursday April 2-May 28 (no class on 4/16), 6-7pm

Cost: $300
